chapter 7 - warm inside

Every country has its great inventions. In China it’s the thermos. It took a few days for us to properly learn the etiquette. If you place an empty thermos outside the door to your room it is miraculously filled with boiling hot water within fifteen minutes, no matter what time of day or night. And, there is always a fresh thermos outside the door in the morning with another one put in the room during the day. No matter how long it sits there, the water is nothing less than scalding hot. We simply had to buy one. I love that we are buying permanent things together.

“It’s lucky you and I seem to like the same things.”

“It’s not luck at all. I know you have good taste and I want it to rub off on me.”

“No. Really?”

“Of course. You’re so refined.”

I laughed. “Refined!”

“You know my buddies have a nickname for you: ‘refined white sugar’. They are constantly asking how I managed to find someone like you. They think I must have won you in a raffle.”
